Medicare Supplement verses Medigap Plans
What’s the difference?
As a Medicare beneficiary, you have several ways to get coverage beyond Original Medicare. Here's a tip to make your decision a little easier: Medicare Supplement plans and Medigap plans are the same thing.
Why are there two names for the same kind of coverage? Because a Medicare Supplement plan helps cover "gaps" in Original Medicare coverage - costs you're responsible for like deductibles and coinsurance.

Why would I want to buy a Medigap plan?
Medicare doesn’t pay for all of your healthcare costs. There are “gaps” or “out-of-pocket” costs that you must pay in the Original Medicare plan. The chart below gives some examples of these gaps. A Medigap policy covers some but not all of the gaps in the Original Medicare plan.
If you are in the Original Medicare plan, a Medigap policy might help you:
- Lower your out-of-pocket costs, and
- Get more health insurance coverage

To view examples of costs you could pay if you are in Original Medicare, without a Medigap Policy, see the chart on page 8 of the Choosing a Medigap Policy publication from Medicare.gov.
NOTE: Humana’s offerings may vary by state. Humana does not offer plans E, H, I or J. Medicare Supplement plans are not managed care.
